I use really thinned down acryclics. Using oils would take a long time to dry i imagine and in addition would make the playmat to "stiff" people want them to still feel fabric-like and so thinning down the acryclic does cause it to bleed in the fabric but when you start applying it in layers you can control it more. It takes a little practice but i am getting it down now that i'm a few playmats in. You basically want to use it like watercolors, start with a very wet light coat, then slow build up the detail and color contrast. I would suggest working on a playmat for personal use first, that way if you mess up you can fix it for yourself and no one is unhappy.
